Yellow pea
At Protealis, we see yellow pea as a strategic crop in the future of sustainable plant-based protein production in Europe. Demand for diversified protein sources for human food continues to grow rapidly, supported by the expansion of pea processing capacity across Europe. Yellow peas are also highly suitable for sensitive diets and clean-label food applications. Our breeding program combines strong agronomic performance with food quality traits, delivering value throughout the chain, from field to fork.
Pea cultivation today faces increasing pressure from soilborne and airborne diseases, which can cause severe yield losses ranging from 30% to 80% in extreme cases. At the same time, climate change and evolving pesticide regulations are creating an urgent need for more resilient and sustainable cropping solutions. Protealis is addressing these challenges through a dedicated yellow pea breeding program focused on improving crop resilience, including resistance and tolerance to key biotic stresses such as virus pressure.
What sets the Protealis pea breeding program apart is the combination of deep scientific expertise and advanced breeding technologies. Building on our soybean breeding platform, we are leveraging speed breeding and our proprietary Delphi™ technology to accelerate innovation and rapidly respond to market demands. With a market-oriented and collaborative approach, Protealis’ first yellow pea varieties are currently in registration phase.
Characterized by both high yield and protein content, our pea varieties in development are specifically designed to excel in various food applications.
